CSPS PRESIDENT – OCTOBER MESSAGE

Breast Cancer Awareness Month and BRA Day

Dear CSPS Family,

It’s October, marking Breast Cancer Awareness month and October 17th is Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day!  This month shines light on the incredible work being done across the country by breast cancer researchers, physicians, and patients as well as shares the stories of the many courageous patients and their families. As CSPS, our members do so much to help educate the public and bring awareness to breast health and treatment as well as support the fight against breast cancer and increase access to breast reconstruction.  I would like to highlight a few member activities and events surrounding Breast Cancer Awareness month and BRA Day.

I had the privilege of joining in Loma Linda’s 10th Annual Pink Runway Event. Led by Dr. Subhas Gupta and the Faculty, the event was both fun and educational for all.  Community and industry partners came out in force to show their support for patients and their families affected by breast cancer.  The Fact or Fiction Panel addressed 10 Common Breast Cancer Reconstruction Myths and highlighted the multidisciplinary team involved in the care of breast cancer patients.

Kara Adams, author of Hidden Treasure and Special Guest Speaker shared about her personal experience with breast cancer in her talk The Roadmap To Finding Your Purpose After Cancer.  Dr. and Mrs. Gupta’s children, Shayle and Saira, presented the Geeta Sugangh Sunshine Award, honoring their grandmother, a philanthropist and the initial inspiration for this event.

All this culminated in the fashion show where the strength, courage, and beauty of all the models lit up the room as they strutted their stuff down the Pink Runway.

This month, many of our members are doing their part to educate and bring awareness to women who wish to consider breast reconstruction.  Please support these events through your attendance and promotion through social media, always remembering to tag #californiaplasticsurgeons and #csps.

Check out Anne Peled’s Instagram @drannepeled every day this month for #breastcancer and #breastcare tips, information, and stories that inspire.  Also, attend and show your support for Anne, the Co-Director California Pacific Medical Center’s Breast Program and her Breast Health Center Team at the Bothin Auditorium on Oct 17th for their special BRA Day Event from 4:00 – 7:30 pm.  Hear presentations from CSPS member Gabriel Kind and others, focusing on advances and innovations in breast surgery and reconstruction.

Visit Karen Horton’s BRA Day page, www.drkarenhorton.com/bra-day/ to see all the fun in store for attendees of her 7th Annual San Francisco Bay Area BRA Day USA event on Wednesday Oct 17th at The Gazebo, Davies Campus of California Pacific Medical Center.  Relax and unwind from 4:00 – 5:30 for a wine tasting event with vendors and community businesses supporting breast cancer care.  From 5:30 – 6:00 pm, the event culminates in a fashion show featuring Karen’s breast reconstruction patients modeling Everviolet, a new line of comfortable and beautiful garments to wear throughout the healing process.  You may also click here to view the flyer for this wonderful event.

Support Lynn Jeffers in her 9th Annual St. Johns Breast Symposium on Saturday October 27th from 8:30 am – 2:00 pm. Click here for more information. You will learn about the latest hot topics in breast health through a multidisciplinary panel of medical experts as well as enjoy specialized clothing skin care consultants, and jewelry from local vendors.

As always, if you have events and would like CSPS to help get the word out, please share this information with the CSPS Executive Office.

Finally, I had the personal privilege to sit down with one of my breast reconstruction patients who was gracious enough to share about her experience.  Like the many events and posts of our CSPS members, I hope that “Taking the Journey – Ella’s Story” can help to inform, educate, and inspire other breast reconstruction patients and those considering reconstructive surgery.  In the words of Ella, “Never give up hope, because hope is what sustains us.”  Click this link to the YouTube video to be launched BRA Day, October 17th.

Let’s don our pink and get the word out.  Do you use Instagram, Twitter or Facebook?  Please share about these and the many other wonderful things our members continue to do on behalf of our patients and families around Breast Cancer Awareness and BRA Day. #plasticsurgery #breastcancerawareness #breastreconstructionawareness #braday #californiaplasticsurgeons #csps

Annual Scientific Meeting
I am pleased to announce that our 69th Annual CSPS Meeting will be held in Sacramento from May 30 – June 2, 2019.  As a proud Sacramentan, I am eager to welcome you back to the Capital City!  Much has changed since our last meeting was held here in 2003.  We are the Farm-to-Fork Capital with many wonderful places to dine and DoCo, short for downtown commons, is the new place to hang out.  My residents and all the great Sacramento plastic surgeons look forward to welcoming you, promising to show you all a good time!

Call for Abstracts
We are moving up the deadline for abstract submissions to November 16, 2018 in order to make room for a change in submission to the CSPS special Supplement to the Annals of Plastic Surgery.   This year will be the first time we are publishing accepted abstracts in the May 2019 CSPS Supplement to Annals of Plastic Surgery.  We hope that this will allow meeting participants to follow each abstract, enabling them to take notes and more actively engage in the presentation.  The official Call for Abstracts will be released in the next two weeks.  Please check our website for updates.
