Presidential Message - Dr.Barttelbort
Dear CSPS Family –
This holiday season, I want to focus on the Spirit of Giving; with that being said, if any of you want to share events, foundation work you are doing, etc. that speaks about “giving back”, please share it with us and we can share it with the CSPS Membership.
#CSPS2020 Annual Meeting Updates
The CSPS Scientific Program Committee is in full-swing with preparation and planning for the #CSPS2020 Annual Meeting. This year we will be experimenting and trying out some new ideas to re-energize the Annual Meeting. We are planning on having expert speakers on panels discussing cutting-edge topics such as Facial Rejuvenation, Regenerative Medicine, Body Contouring, Breast, Rhinoplasty, and more! Over the next few weeks, I will be dropping little “hints” on who has been invited to speak at the Meeting. First announcement I would like to make is Dr. Tim Marten who will be giving a talk on the nuances of facelifting & his particular focus on techniques for neck rejuvenation.
FDA Update on Breast Implants
Safety and risks of breast implants were discussed at the meeting in March of 2019 with the FDA’s General and Plastic Surgery Devices Panel. The panel heard from members from ASAPS, ASPS, patient advocates groups, and manufacturers.
The FDA’s recommendations emphasized improved patient monitoring and collection of critical data are vital steps to keeping the patients informed.
The FDA wants patients, manufacturers, and plastic surgeons to provide more information with regard to safety and long terms effects.
As of October 23rd, the FDA released the following regarding Breast Implants:
Breast Implants – Certain Labeling Recommendations to Improve Patient Communication Draft Guidance
The draft guidance, Breast Implants – Certain Labeling Recommendations to Improve Patient Communication, provides recommendations for the form and content for certain labeling information for saline and silicone gel-filled breast implants, including:
- Boxed warning
- Patient decision checklist
- Materials/device descriptions, including types and quantities of chemicals and heavy metals found in or released by breast implants
- Silicone gel-filled breast implant rupture screening recommendations
- Patient device card
When final, the recommendations in this guidance will supplement or, in some cases, replace recommendations in the FDA’s Saline, Silicone Gel, and Alternative Breast Implants guidance, issued November 17, 2006.
This draft guidance will be open for public comments for 60 days, through December 23, 2019, at www.regulations.gov under docket number FDA-2019-D-4467.
The CSPS encourages you to visit the FDA website for more information. The link is as follows:
The CSPS will continue to keep you updated on this issue!
Mollenkopf Breast Reconstruction Fund
I highlighted this program in my September newsletter, and I certainly believe it needs another mention. The Mollenkopf Breast Reconstruction Fund, established in 2016 and made possible through generous restricted donations to ASERF by Susan and Steve Mollenkopf and matched by the Qualcomm Foundation, provides grants of up to $5,000 to assist underinsured or uninsured patients in completing a quality aesthetic breast reconstruction following breast cancer. This unique patient support fund was inspired by Susan Mollenkopf. Susan is a two-time breast cancer survivor and patient of mine. To date, the Fund has made more than 60 grants available to eligible patients. Currently, the Fund’s availability is not restricted to California alone, but rather to patients nationwide. If you know of an eligible patient, please let them know about this program and share it with colleagues, etc. to help spread the word. Click here for more information and to apply.

Dr. B fishing on the Snake River
Hiking in the Tetons
I wanted to share with you that I took a little time to decompress and took a short trip to Wyoming. I wanted to take a moment to slow-down from the fast-pace life that we all lead and be “in the moment” to enjoy some of the simple things in life. I had time to take hikes, soaking in the beautiful scenery, and go fishing (I caught two, by the way). I know as busy surgeons, it is hard to carve out the time for yourself, but I want to encourage you all to try and do this whenever possible. It is important to make time for yourself, family, and friends. It is truly about balance and in order to keep up our standard of practice, that is key!
Yours in health,
Scott W. Barttelbort, MD
