March 2022 President's Message

Greetings! Happy New Year! Starting off the new year, I was a visiting professor at UC Davis. I enjoyed meeting and quizzing the residents. Then we enjoyed a great lunch at Il Fornaio where I shared my past time that had been spent with the giants in the field of craniofacial surgery: Ian Jackson, Fernando Ortiz- Monasterio, and Claus Lauritzen.

I attended a San Diego Plastic Surgery meeting where Tim Madden and I updated the members at the La Costa Omni in Carlsbad. There I met our international friends from across the border who will be meeting in August at the Valle de Guadalupe for an aesthetic program. Read More

In Memory of Dr. Gilbert Gradinger
This weekend we lost a giant in plastic surgery, Dr. Gilbert Gradinger.

Throughout his exemplary career, Gil made numerous contributions to and served many leadership roles within our specialty. He completed his plastic surgery residency at the University of California, San Francisco, in 1961. After serving two years as a plastic surgeon in the United States Air Force, Gil started a private practice in Burlingame, California, from 1963 to 2000. In his “retirement,” Gil went on to become a vital member of the faculty here at UCSF. In 2012, he was presented with the prestigious Charlotte Baer Award for distinguished service as a volunteer clinical professor. Amongst his many legacies at UC, he was most proud of the now robust aesthetic surgery resident clinic that he originally created and nurtured so successfully during his tenure.

Dr. Gradinger was one of a handful of plastic surgeons who made aesthetic surgery part of the teaching curriculum, not just at UCSF but on the national stage. In 1968, Gil was a founding member of The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and, in 1979, became the president of the organization. In 1982, Gil was an ASAPS Traveling Professor, which included speaking at Harvard University as the Kazanjian Lecturer. To honor his stalwart commitment to our Society, he was bestowed the Aesthetic Society’s Career Achievement Award in 2015. He was a director of the American Board of Plastic Surgery and in 1994, had the distinction of being one of only a handful of private practice surgeons to become its Chairman.

His daunting command of the art and science of aesthetic surgery was demonstrated by his publications and presentations which covered the entire spectrum of aesthetic surgery. However, all these notable accolades and accomplishments fail to fully define the qualities of the man that we were fortunate to have known: his prodigious wit and synthetic intelligence, his legendary humility, and balletic hands.

Gil Gradinger was in life unforgettable, and he will remain so forever in the hearts and minds of all of his colleagues and students at UCSF.
